The Science of Flower Essences

Modern flower essence therapy is based on the work of Dr Edward Bach (1886-1936), an English physician who broke away from conventional medicine to develop a collection of flower-based remedies now famous as the Bach Flower Remedies.

Bach, as a scientist, former bacteriologist and Harley Street consultant, based his research on careful clinical experiment and a close study of the herbal and homeopathic materia medica. Flower essences are related to homeopathy in that they operate by means not of chemicals but energy; Bach recognised this phenomenon and showed astonishing insights – well ahead of his time – into their action on living organisms when he described their effect, and their energy, as “magnetic”.[i] In terms of modern science, flower essences appear to involve the use of ultraweak bioelectromagnetic fields, processed from fresh plants and photo-electrically energised by exposure to thermonuclear radiation (the sun), married to the proven ability of ordinary water to record, store and later re-emit subtle electrical energy.

Flower essences appear to carry an electrical healing signal into the body, subtle but capable of being “read” as a kind of digital bio-software by the body and producing deep beneficial effects in both animals and humans. We are as yet unable to measure the actual signal they transmit – biology is still only able to figure out a fraction of the electrical workings of the cell, let alone the greater body – but a variety of scientific studies have demonstrated diverse beneficial effects of this very sophisticated therapy.

There is strong scientific credibility behind flower essence therapy, and in the light of recent breakthroughs in physics and biology, as well as clinical trials showing the effectiveness of the therapy, it is no longer appropriate to be sceptical or disbelieving about these remedies.

A growing number of healthcare professionals across the world are turning to flower essence therapy for its simplicity of use, absolute safety record and high success rate.

The Growth of Flower Essence and other Complementary Therapy in the Mainstream - Some Facts:

o 30% of doctors in Denmark and Germany use flower essences and other complementary therapies.[ii]

o As part of the growth of natural therapies in the mainstream, 25% of veterinary surgeries in the UK use herbal remedies [iii]

o The Cuban Ministry of Public Health invited two Argentinean Professors to teach the first official course in Flower Essence therapy to doctors and other medical professionals in 1997. By October 1998 there were 104 graduates, with 25 research studies showing notable results in treating various physical and psychological pathologies such as migraines, depression, skin conditions, menopausal symptoms, stress and asthma. Due to these encouraging results the Ministry of Public Health authorities officially recognised Flower Essence therapy in January 1999 as a valid medical modality to be integrated into the National Health System.

o Several scientific trials conducted by doctors in the USA and Central America have demonstrated significant reductions in depression on both the Beck and Hamilton Depression Inventories after treatment with Flower Essence therapy.

o In Australia, Flower Essence therapy is now being used in many major hospitals. One of its uses has been in special pain management units, helping with mental tension and resulting muscular tension and pain in patients recovering from major surgery who could not obtain full relief from opiate drugs.

o In Australia is it also now possible to take a University degree in Flower Essence studies, based on the pioneering research of Drs V and K Barnao into the benefits of a wide range of essences produced from Australian flora. The Barnaos also have been successful in promoting Flower Essence therapy for animals in Australia. “[The Drs Barnao] have worked with animals in many situations. Firstly they treated domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but in the late 1980s they began to work with horses and this led to other farm animals being treated. Lastly they became involved with wild animal rescue groups, particularly work with orphaned joeys [kangaroo babies]. At their Academy they established a Roo Rescue program to give free consultations and wild flower essences for the joeys. This has given very successful results, with survival rates climbing even higher”. [iv]

o At the Escuela Nacional de Arte (National School of Art) in Havana, Cuba, all students receive flower essences during their 4-year course of study to address emotional blocks that interfere with the creative process.

o Adverse effects from the use of Flower Essence therapy are unknown and have never emerged either in anecdotal reports or in scientific studies.
A Selection of Peer-reviewed Scientific Studies:
Flower Essence Therapy in the Treatment of Major Depression Dr Jeffrey Cram; Dr Pedro Sastriques Silva; Dr Maria de los Angeles Fernandez de la Liera; Dr Sol Ines Tena Rodriguez This study comprised 5 independent clinical trials investigating the use of Flower Essence therapy in depression. Between them over 150 subjects were studied. In the first trial, held in Cuba, there was a significant reduction in depressive symptoms. The second and third trials also showed significant drops in depression with further decreases during the 2nd and 3rd months. Both studies showed reductions of the BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) total score of 76-77%. The fourth study utilised 24 cases over a 3 month period and showed a 60-80% reduction in symptoms after treatment period. The fifth study entailed a multi-site clinical trial on 12 patients and showed a 50% reduction in depressive symptoms.

Long Term Study in Mental Health Treatment, Cuba This study was carried out in a Havana hospital and demonstrated the positive effects of Flower Essence therapy with severely affected psychiatric patients. 400 schizophrenics and neurotics were treated with flower essences from August 1996 through June 1999. This was one of the studies that led to the adoption of Flower Essence therapy in the Cuban National Health System.

Cuban Study on Depression This was carried out by Dr Maria de los Angeles Fernandez de la Llera, a psychiatric physician in Havana, Cuba. 20 patients were studied: 4 males and 16 females ranging from 21 to 80 years of age. 7 had been suffering from depression for less than 1 year. The rest had been suffering from depression for more than 1 year. Two had a 2-year history, two a 3-year history, three had a 5-year history and one had a 6-year history. As a result of the treatment, BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) scores dropped significantly. They began in the severely depressed range, reaching the normal range by month 2.

Flower Essence Therapy for AD/HD. An American pilot study on the use of Flower Essences in human children with a diagnosis of AD/HD (attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder) likewise showed Flower Essences to be efficacious in reducing inner tension and hyperactivity as measured by the Childhood Attention Profile (CAP). The children were given a combination of Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum plus Vervain and Walnut. Children were chosen rather than adults for this study due to the fact that these remedies are so safe, having long been used in children and in pregnancy. Essences and placebos were randomly administered to ten children aged 5 to 12 who were being admitted for hospitalisation at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, USA. All ten children were on drug therapy when the trial began. At the end of the three month pilot trial period, three of the five children in the placebo group had moved to in-patient hospitalisation, i.e. got worse. In contrast, in the Flower Essence group, three of the five children were functioning well and off all medication. [v]

Australian Study on Flower Essence Therapy for Panic Attacks. This study was carried out by Marie Smith M.A as part of a Thesis project for the Australasian Flower Essence Academy. 20 subjects suffering from chronic panic attacks were studied, many of whom had been on conventional medication which did not help. After Flower Essence therapy, following results were noted: 65% of patients reported a reduction in frequency of panic attacks and the degree of stress they were feeling after 1 week. 15% of subjects reported a lessening in the frequency of attacks after 10 days. 20% set their time of improvement at 2 weeks. Over 65% admitted to being free of panic attacks after 4 weeks. 80% were still taking essences after 6 months. 5% stopped taking the essences and relapsed soon afterwards.[vi]

Flower Essences for Heroin Addiction. A further study at the Australasian Flower Essence Academy, carried out by Lee-Anne Heron, investigated the use of Flower Essence therapy in aiding heroin addicts in withdrawing from drug use. The study reported a 93% success rate. The full case can be viewed in the Journal of the Australasian Flower Essence Academy.
